The Sketchbook Project.

18th June 2010 ... 3:19 pm

Hello,

I stumbled upon the very unique and exciting Sketchbook Project yesterday and thought I’d share.  Organised by the Art House Co-op, the idea is simple and brilliant:  order a sketchbook, choose a theme (or let them choose one at random for you), and fill up the sketchbook with art, ideas, inspiration etc within the realms of the theme.  Finally, return your sketchbook back to them by January 15th, 2011 and the book (with all of your work) will go on a tour to be exhibited at various cities across the USA.  After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view.

Needless to say, I’ve jumped upon the chance to participate and a black moleskin sketchbook is winging its way to me right now.. I’ve chosen the rather ambiguous theme of ‘inside/outside’.  Not entirely sure how I’m going to tackle it, but excited at the chance (and opportunity) all the same.

Costs are $25 to participate and an additional $20 for your sketchbook to be digitised (plus shipping to wherever you are in the world).

Have a great weekend..

Chris

disposable camera.

Hi,

Here are some recent photographs from disposable cameras.. I had been meaning to scan these in for awhile and finally got round to it at the weekend..

These are miscellaneous photographs (mostly from a playground at Kew Bridge, London) from the last year or so, in no order of relevance or theme, and edited a little in Lightroom for colour and mood..

I can see why so many  sing the merits of film over digital.  Even right at the bottom end of the film camera market (and through plastic lenses too), I find film captures something just outside of the digital eye; an essence beyond the realm of 0′s and 1′s perhaps?

I think vi. is my favourite of all of these.  This was taken on a spring day looking into (and through) the water of the local duckpond.  The frame details the reflection through the calm waters, in the centre faraway places usher us forward.

In other news, I’ve been working on a new personal project based upon the idea of unrelated cascading images.  This stemmed from looking at Tumblr blogs, and how some individuals had used the service to collect and display images they had found from around the web  (unfortunately, I’ve lost many of my bookmarks recently otherwise I would’ve shared some examples with you)..

I  found myself really enjoying the peculiar sense of narrative forming from viewing completely unrelated images in a sequence.  My new project is based upon this idea, and if it goes the right way, I’ll be very interested in collaborating with other artists to take the idea forward.  I am close to finishing the first piece, and should be able to share soon.

Thanks for reading.

Chris
